Office for Data Release (ODR)

Requesting NDRS data through ODR

On 1 October 2021 responsibility for the National Disease Registration Service (NDRS) transferred to NHS Digital from Public Health England (PHE). NHS Digital are working with the Office for Data Release in the UK Health Security Agency to provide interim access to the NDRS data previously supplied by PHE. This service will be available from 6 December 2021.

Existing requests for NDRS data

Applications, amendments and expressions of interest submitted to the ODR prior to 1 September will be processed based on the date order in which they were submitted, with the exception of a small number of high priority applications. You will be contacted by a member of the ODR in due course to advise further on your request.

New requests for access to NDRS data

To make an enquiry about access to NDRS data or to request a copy of the updated pre-application pack, please contact ODR@phe.gov.uk. For details on the application process please click here.

Data accessible via NHS Digital’s Data Access Request Service

Access to other NHS Digital data assets will continue to be processed via the Data Access Request Service (DARS). Information about which data can be accessed via DARS and the application process can be found here.

Applications for access to multiple data sources

HES or mortality data linked to NDRS data can be requested through the ODR route. Applications seeking NDRS data linked to other data assets from NHS Digital will, for now, continue to require separate applications to ODR for NDRS data and to DARS for the remaining NHSD data.

Novation of existing contracts

If you have received a contract novation from NHS Digital, this will need to be signed and returned before any further data can be released. For any questions relating to contract novation please contact NDRSenquiries@nhs.net

Further enquiries

If you are unsure if ODR or another approval is necessary for your project, please contact ODR@phe.gov.uk

There is work underway to streamline and improve the application for data process across NHS Digital to reduce the burden on applicants. We ask for your patience and understanding during this transition period. We are looking forward to providing you a more streamlined data access service for all NHS Digital data assets including NDRS in the future.
